Rumour: Tougher Sony Xperia ZR Being Made?

The Sony Xperia Z made waves with its IP57 water, dust and heat durability. Now, rumours are swirling that another tough Sony Xperia smartphone may be coming, this time with IP58 durability rating. According to these rumours, this new tougher smartphone may be called the Sony Xperia ZR. Tech specs for the Sony Xperia ZR may include the following:

  • 1.5GHz Quadcore Snapdragon S4 Pro processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 13MP Exmor RS camera
  • 4.6-inch screen (720p)
  • 8GB storage
  • 2300 mAh battery
  • 10mm thick + 140g weight

The IP58 rating means that on top of being dust proof, the Sony Xperia ZR will also be able to withstand 1.5 meters of water for a much longer period of time (about 30 minutes). While this still isn't the toughest yet, it does mean that this is the smartphone you may want to bring with you next time you go snorkeling. The fact that it will also follow the Xperia ZL's chassis and design also makes it more likely to be tougher against drops, as opposed to the dual-glass chassis of the Xperia Z. No details about pricing or any exact dates but as usual, we will keep you posted as to any new developments.
