Earlier this month, it was rumoured that Qualcomm could launch two flagship chipsets for the next generation. It's uncertain whether both will be unveiled at the upcoming Snapdragon Summit. But the latest report suggests that the two chipsets will be more similar than expected.

Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 + Snapdragon 8 Elite 2

According to Digital Chat Station, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is neither an iteration nor a rebrand of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 (SM8735). Instead, it's to be another flagship chipset for the Snapdragon 8 series. Based on the info available so far, we can expect the Snapdragon 8 series to include the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5, Snapdragon 8s Gen 5, and Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.

The Chinese tipster also claimed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 will be manufactured on the same TSMC enhanced 3nm process as the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, as well as the same Oryon CPU and SME instruction set. No further details were mentioned, but Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 could end up becoming more of a cut-down/binned version of the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 instead of a completely different chipset.

Debuting model?

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 offers smartphone brands another 'tier' option for flagship devices. This is relevant in 2025, as many brands have 'Ultra' and 'Pro' models in their flagship series. Having another Snapdragon flagship chipset could be good for brands to better differentiate their flagship phones.
