Rumours: Samsung may adopt Synaptic’s optical fingerprint sensor for the Galaxy S8

A new fingerprint sensor technology introduced by Synaptics may be the option that Samsung will take for their upcoming flagship smartphone for 2017. The new optical-based fingerprint sensor from the company dispenses the need of a physical sensor on the smartphone itself.

The new sensor can work behind glass, as thick as 1mm, and can sit behind the display panel of the smartphone. The optical sensor also works through 2.5D glass, so manufacturers can be creative on the location of the sensor when designing their smartphone. It supports Synaptic’s PurePrint technology that can distinguish between real and fake fingerprints.

The chance of Samsung adopting this technology is quite high, thanks to the need to differenciate themselves with the competition. It doesn’t mean that Samsung will adopt this technology from Synaptics – they may have other vendors to fall on, or even an in-house development team. However we will definitely see something different with their upcomign Samsung Galaxy S8 smartphone, so stay tuned to TechNave to find out what.
