SAIC Motor Malaysia announced plans to commence local assembly of MG vehicles in Melaka in the first half of 2026 through a strategic partnership with EP Manufacturing Berhad (EPMB). So, what should you know about it?

A rapid growth for MG in Malaysia

For your information, this move marks a new phase in MG’s local assembly strategy in Malaysia and will strengthen the country’s position as a regional hub for green energy vehicles. Since its launch over a year ago, MG has grown rapidly with 26 authorised dealers nationwide, including three showrooms in Sarawak, with three more scheduled to open soon.

In addition, the current model line-up includes five vehicles, including the MG S5 and MG Cyberster, which recorded the best sales performance in the Asia Pacific region. The assembly facility in Melaka will be capable of producing Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) and Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) models under one roof.

Besides that, three priorities are emphasised: affordability, faster delivery and a higher level of localisation. The collaboration with EPMB also includes the participation of local suppliers and a plan to install battery packs in the country.

Lastly, this investment not only expands MG's presence in the local market but also opens up opportunities for future research and development (R&D) activities
