Samsung Galaxy S21 expected to come without ToF sensor

Whether Samsung is going to name its next flagship smartphone series like the Galaxy S21 or S30 is still up in the air, but rumours are already breaking out. One new rumour claims that the company will be looking to drop the ToF sensor for the Galaxy S21. It should be noted that this was what the company decided to do with the recently launched Galaxy Note 20 series.

According to The Elec (via GSMArena), Samsung is likely to launch its next flagship series without the ToF sensor due to lack of use cases. It's also said that Samsung's ToF sensor isn't as powerful as the LiDAR sensor developed by Sony. Samsung can't purchase it either, as Apple has an exclusivity deal with Sony.

ToF sensors can be used to do things like measure the dimensions of an item

In light of that, Samsung will probably work on improving its ToF sensor. Once the company has a level where it is satisfied with, we should see ToF sensors appearing in Samsung flagship smartphones again. How long the research and development process could take is unknown, but it could be up to a year.

The launch of Samsung's next flagship series is a long way to go, so we won't know how legit this rumour is until next year. Having said that, do you think the lack of ToF would have any significant effects on the quality of photos taken?
