Some might have been disappointed by Samsung's decision to not use an under-display fingerprint scanner on the Galaxy Z Fold3. Rather than that, the company opted for an old-school side scanner for necessary security. However, with the upcoming Z Fold4, the Korean tech giant might take one step further than an under-display fingerprint scanner by using one that scans on both sides.
According to a patent filed with World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) back in March, Samsung could position the Galaxy Z Fold4's fingerprint scanner in a way that it can be used both outside the cover of the screen and the main display. The scanner placed beneath the lower-left half of the flexible screen gets assisted by a small printed circuit board (PCB) placed between the sensors, which in turn is connected to the main printed circuit board. With that, users can scan their fingerprints no matter the device is folded or unfolded.
Not only it's a new technology, but the idea could also prevent creasing over time by flipping close the device every time you need a fingerprint scan. It's still unsure if Samsung will ever bring this patent to life. Therefore, it's still better to take this with a pinch of salt with this kind of report.
