As far as software updates go for Android phone, they unfortunately don't last very long. At most, it can live up to 3 years with a pure stock Android OS but nowadays they don't really hang around in Malaysia anymore (because Motorola "died" and there are no Pixel phones here officially). Also, Android users would have to wait for a long time for a new software update on customized Android updates.

Despite that, the collaboration with Qualcomm will be changing that scheme. Most Android devices such as Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices are now eligible to reach up to 4 years of major software updates. On top of that, the collaboration allows Android devices to have at least 4 OS versions as well as security updates for years.

For each SoC model, the SoC manufacturers now needed to create multiple combinations of vendor implementations to support OEMs who would use that chipset to launch new devices and deploy OS upgrades on previously launched devices. The result is that three years beyond the launch of a chipset, the SoC vendor would have to support up to 6 combinations of OS framework software and vendor implementations

All Qualcomm customers will be able to take advantage of this stability to further lower both the costs of upgrades as well as launches and can now support their devices for longer periods of time.

Apparently, Google has been working on this Project Treble since 2017 as they restructure the Android system to be more modular. This allows the system to be updated faster and easier without changing the vendor implementation, especially for specific devices with low-level software. You can read the caption above by 9to5google.com as how Google laid out the plan on supporting OEMs using the chipset.

As of posting this news, Google said that there are 667 million active Android 10 users and about 82% of them got the Android 11 update. The company hopes to continue this momentum with their partners to either launch the smartphones with Android 11 pre-installed or offer OTA updates.
