Virtual reality has often been a subject of science fiction works from movies and novels, but Samsung's latest mind-boggling technology says otherwise, you can actually see more and more people using it especially in YouTube and Facebook lately. Virtual reality has never been this close but it's here now, and Samsung brought it to us even closer by releasing the Samsung Gear VR two weeks ago, with quite a reasonable price if one might add for RM459 (with GST). It's also compatible with Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy S6, S6 edge and S6 edge+ smartphones.

In the Middle of the Action

As the name implies, people get to dive into the virtual world and experience similar emotions like in real life. One example, New York Times got the taste of experiencing “The Displaced”, which is a 360-degree video storytelling about a plight of refugee children forced from their homes by war and persecution, allowed the journalist to explore and feel personal as if he was there with them.

It's even predicted that the device could make a new marketing trend, as there are already several large media organizations, as well as athletes, celebrities and TV show producers, have put together promotional videos offering a variety of immersive content options to engage fans.

But it's not only for promotional means, it can also be used for educational purpose. like surgical training tools for medical students, and content that aims to treat illnesses such as post-traumatic stress disorder in war veterans or phantom limb syndrome in amputees.

A New Way to Consume, Create and Connect

Beside being able to engage the cyber universe with immersive videos online via Samsung Internet for Gear VR app, people can also fully utilize the Gear VR to create creative contents as seen in YouTube. Even organizations like Sundance Institute, has established a residency program for independent filmmakers who hope to lay the groundwork for this new film genre. YouTube also took note of this, and offers video makers resources, workshops and social gatherings just for them.

In time, people will begin to increasingly share their work online for artistic, personal, promotional or educational matters. The possibilities are endless and we can't wait to see the creative immersive stories and contents the people make in the future.
