Samsung Offering 5G by 2020

We've only just scratched the surface with 4G LTE, especially here in Malaysia with only Maxis and Celcom offering it (and rumours that DiGi may be offering 4G LTE soon as well). This isn't too different in the rest of the world as well, as 4G LTE adoption has yet to gain the same acceptance as 3G. Regardless of this, Samsung are currently working on 5G technology which they hope to bring to the masses by 2020.

According to Samsung they have already developed the core technology required for the 5G network. Recent testing with a 28 Gigahertz waveband allows the transmission of data at 1Gbps. According to Samsung this will allow you to download an entire movie in less than a second (we're guessing this is at least a 720p movie). When it is up and running Samsung foresee it being able to download and upload data tens of gigabits per second. To put it in even better perspective, today's 4G LTE fastest networks go at 75 Mbps (10Mbps here in Malaysia).

The new 5G technology is also being implemented for smartphones and tablets, with Samsung saying they have already developed 64 antenna elements. For most of us, 2020 sounds like it is quite far off, but with it already being 2013, this is just a short 7 years away.
