Omdia, a global research and advisory group focused on the technology industry recently shared a report regarding the foldable smartphone market in 2021. Unsurprisingly, Samsung dominated the market throughout last year, with the Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G being the best-selling foldable last year.

In fact, the sales of Galaxy Z Flip 3 5G was head and shoulders above every other foldable, including Samsung’s other foldables. With 4.6 million shipments, the smartphone is responsible for 52% of all foldable sales last year.

Coming in second place is Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 3 5G with 2.5 million units sold. Other Samsung foldables in the list include the Galaxy Z Flip 5GGalaxy Z Fold 2 5G and the first Galaxy Z Flip. In total, Samsung devices accounted for a whopping 88% of foldables sales, with over 10 million units shipped worldwide last year.

Zaker Li, Omdia mobile devices team’s Principal Analyst attributed this to the South Korean tech giant’s advantage in the foldable display supply chain. With the Samsung Display department, Samsung is practically the world’s number one foldable display maker.

Samsung’s competitors in the foldable space really need some catching up to do. The second largest OEM in the market last year was Huawei with a 10% market share and around 0.9 million units shipped.

Admittedly, Huawei has a disadvantage due to its sanctions in the United States, whereby it can only sell 4G smartphone models which have been shipped to China’s domestic market. The best-selling foldable by Huawei last year was its Mate X2 with around 500000 units sold.

Meanwhile, another Chinese company, OPPO also joined the foldable space last year with its Find N. Furthermore, Honor also joined the space earlier this year with its Magic V.

Overall though, the foldable smartphone market is seeing incredible growth annually. In fact, the market grew a whopping 309% year-over-year since the first foldable smartphone in 2019! Furthermore, it is expected to further grow this year.

What do you guys think about the future of foldable smartphones? Do you own a foldable smartphone now or are you waiting for the technology and offerings to evolve further first?
