From time to time, Samsung would be developing something new for the tech industry. This time, the company just announced the industry's first 14-nanometre (nm) based 16GB Low Power Double Data Rate 5X (LPDDR5X) DRAM. This was designed to be compatible with future service applications such as 5G, AI and the metaverse.

In terms of technicality and functionality, the LPDDR5X DRAM is able to offer data processing speeds of up to 8.5Gbps. Compare that to the predecessor, it's 1.3 times faster than before. Moreover, since it's using the 14nm process, that makes it 20% less power consumption than LPDDR5 memory. Samsung also said the 16GB LPDDR5X chip enables up to 64GB per memory package.

Samsung will be collaborating with a few global chipset manufacturers by the end of this year. As 5G is already a norm in new smartphone releases, we will be seeing more of the LPDDR5X in selected flagships and perhaps even mid-range tier devices. We won't be surprised if the upcoming Galaxy S22 series would feature it.
