American technological research and consulting firm Gartner recently published data on the worldwide semiconductor industry in 2024, which revealed some interesting findings. In a press release, Gartner revealed that Samsung Electronics reclaimed top spot from Intel as the world’s biggest chip manufacturer last year.
The South Korean tech giant did so by recording a whopping USD66.5 billion revenue in 2024 and controlling 10.6% of the market share. For context, that’s an impressive 62.5% year-on-year growth from 2023.
Meanwhile, Intel claims second spot with a USD49.18 billion revenue, capturing 7.9% of the market share. Making up the top 5 are Nvidia (7.3% market share), SK hynix (6.8% market share) and Qualcomm (5.2% market share). Check out the full data below:
Overall, the worldwide semiconductor revenue last year amounted to USD626 billion, an increase of 18.1% from 2023. VP Analyst at Gartner Geroge Brocklehurst said that the GPU and AI processors used in data centre applications (servers and accelerator cards) were the key drivers for the chip sector in 2024.
