Most modern tech gadgets have been using lithium-ion batteries for the longest time, but that could be changed in the future. According to an industry source, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is exploring an all-solid-state battery and integrating it into the Galaxy Ring by the end of this year.
What's the difference between all-solid-state and lithium-ion batteries? Well, unlike lithium-ion batteries that use liquid electrolytes, all-solid-state batteries use solid electrolytes. This reduces the risk of fire and is characterized by high energy density and high shape freedom. It is also known as the "dream battery".
Sources have also reported that Samsung is planning to apply all-solid-state battery prototypes to the Galaxy Ring in the fourth quarter of this year, followed by TWS earbuds in the fourth quarter of 2026 and lastly, smartwatches in the fourth quarter of 2027. Last year, it had 200Wh/L (watt-hours per litre), the company is now increasing it to 360Wh/L by the end of this year.
It looks like all-solid-state batteries won't be appearing in smartphones anytime soon, with the schedule fully booked for smart wearables until 2027. Stay tuned for more trending tech news at TechNave.com.
