Artificial intelligence is applied in many technology products nowadays, from home appliances to personal devices like smartphones. Now, Samsung has announced that it has found a way to incorporate the concept into its RAM modules and calling it "processing-in-memory (PIM) technology".

"Samsung's LPDDR5-PIM mobile memory technology can provide independent AI capabilities without data center connectivity," claimed the company in an official press release. Furthermore, the "simulation tests have also shown that the LPDDR5-PIM can more than double performance while reducing energy usage by over 60% when used in applications such as voice recognition, translation and chatbot."

The source mentions that the technology could be seen on budget smartphones in the future. With it, smartphone manufacturers can opt for cheaper processors and transfer some heavy-duty tasks to the RAM. Currently, Samsung hasn't revealed when the technology will get commercialized, but it’s aiming to complete the standardization of PIM technology in the first half of 2022.
