Samsung is preparing to roll out its first tri-fold smartphone by the end of 2025, with pricing expected to range between RM13600 and RM15900.
The device, currently in its final development phase, is said to be hardware-ready and undergoing final usability refinements before mass production begins.
Samsung’s confirmation and development progress
TM Roh, head of Samsung's Device Experience division, recently confirmed that the tri-fold phone is on track for a 2025 launch. While the design is finalized, the company is still considering factors like usability and market demand before confirming the final product name and launch markets.
The device was previously showcased in prototype form and appeared in early One UI 8 animation files. However, it was notably absent from Samsung’s Unpacked event in July 2025, which focused on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7.
Production timeline and global availability
Current indications suggest that production of the tri-fold phone will begin in September 2025, with a full launch expected in Q4. However, Samsung may initially restrict availability to South Korea and China.
Reports indicate a limited production run of about 300000 units, as Samsung gauges consumer response to this new form factor.
Expected features and tech specs
Though official specifications are yet to be confirmed, several leaks and reports hint at the following features for the upcoming tri-fold device, likely to be called the Galaxy G Fold:
- Dual-hinge tri-fold design that folds inward in three segments
- Approximately 10-inch OLED main display
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite processor
- Main camera may include a 200MP sensor with ultrawide and telephoto lenses
- Battery capacity expected to be smaller than typical foldables to maintain portability
- Initial markets: South Korea and China
Pricing and positioning
At an expected price point of RM13600 to RM15900, the Galaxy G Fold would be Samsung’s most expensive smartphone to date. This pricing significantly exceeds that of current foldables like the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which start at nearly half that amount.
Samsung appears to be positioning the tri-fold phone as a premium, limited-run device to test market readiness and interest.
A saturated market?
Samsung is not alone in exploring the tri-fold concept. Huawei’s Mate XT, launched earlier, remains the only commercially available tri-fold phone to date.
However, the Galaxy G Fold could offer broader software support, a more refined design, and better integration with Android and Google services—features that may resonate with users in Malaysia and other key markets once it becomes globally available.
