The larger the megapixel of a camera sensor does not always mean it's better. There are also some other features that we need from a sensor including low-light performance, focus ability and more. Today, Samsung has launched a 50MP sensor that is said to be able to perform like a 'DSLR' camera, let's find out how the sensor can achieve that!

Samsung has unveiled a new smartphone camera sensor today and it's called ISOCELL GN1. The sensor comes with 50MP at a 1/1.3-inch size and has relatively large 1.2-micron pixels that will help the camera to perform better in low-light conditions. Other than that, it also has a dual pixel autofocus system that is similar to the one on Canon's cameras, offering DSLR-level autofocus speeds according to Samsung.

With the help of Samsung's Tetracell tech that merges four pixels into one, the sensor is also able to shrink the effective resolution to 12.5MP and multiplies the light-gathering power by four times. Combined with the dual pixel autofocus system, the GN1 can focus on an object quickly even in an extreme low-light environment to deliver brighter and sharper results. The sensor will be a competitor to Sony's IMX689, which is used by OnePlus 8, and is rumoured to be featured on an upcoming vivo device.
