About a week ago, there was a rumour mentioning that Samsung would launch new ISOCELL camera sensors this year. While there's no real news on the rumoured 200MP sensor yet, Samsung did announce a new camera sensor yesterday - ISOCELL HM3.

The ISOCELL HM3 is the company's latest 108MP mobile image sensor, which promises better image quality using advanced sensor technologies. Samsung claims that it will deliver sharper and more vivid images, as well as a faster auto-focus and extended dynamic range. But because Samsung reverted to the use of 0.8μm-sized pixels, the ISOCELL HM3 sensor is larger than its predecessor (1/1.33-inch vs 1/1.52-inch).

In regards to features, the HM3 uses new AF-optimised micro-lenses added to the phase-detection focusing agents to improve the autofocusing speed by 50%. It also has Smart ISO Pro to create images with 12-bit colour depth and helps reduce noise. Allegedly, it even has a low-noise mode that will improve light sensitivity by 50%. In addition to the above, the HM3 is expected to reduce energy usage by 6.5%.

We're not sure if this is the same 108MP sensor installed in the new Galaxy S21 Ultra, but Samsung confirmed that the new sensors have entered mass production. This means that it will at least be made available in other Samsung devices later this year.
