When it comes to eSports, Malaysian gamers are quite passionate but never really took off the charts in international tournaments. However, that has changed recently, the Selangor Red Giants has just won the Mobile Legends Bang Bang Mid Season Cup 2024 tournament. This is the first-ever international trophy for the Malaysian eSports scene.
The MLBB MSC 2024 was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, whereby Selangor Red Giants won against former world champions, AP Bren from the Philippines in a 4-3 score. With the victory, the Malaysian team also won $1 million (~RM4.6 million) as the grand prize, while the opponents received $500,000 (~RM2.3 million).
On top of that, Sekysss, also known as Haqqullah Ahmad Shahrul Zaman, was nominated as the MVP of the tournament last night. During his interview with the New Straits Times, he said he felt like dreaming as this is his first international tournament and becoming a champion. Proving all the naysayers wrong, who predicted a 4-0 loss to AP Bren, he also thanked all the Malaysian fans who supported the team.
A championship victory for MLBB may not seem like a big deal to many Malaysians, but it's enough to get a response from our PM Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. Both proudly congratulated the Selangor Red Giants on Twitter.
