The Selangor government recently reportedly signed a new agreement with the national network communications body, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, to accelerate the process of the smart city development agenda in the state. So, what should you know about it?

For a smarter Selangor

Under this MoU (Memorandum of Understanding), both parties will develop a WiFi and 5G internet connection network that can be enjoyed by the public in the state. In the meantime, the fibre optic network and the installation of "smart poles" will continue to be expanded in the state to facilitate the introduction of new technologies such as smart traffic lights for smoother traffic tracking and more efficient flood mitigation.

Moreover, the Selangor government and MCMC have also agreed to increase the state's infrastructure investment from RM350 million to RM450 million to implement these new technologies. This development phase will also be monitored by the Selangor Integrated & Intelligent Operations Centre (SIIOC).

Additionally, the concept of a Smart City is not new. In December 2025, we also reported that the government had initiated the Cyberjaya Fiberization Project, which is part of the Selangor Dark Fibre Network project, to facilitate access to a fast and secure internet network for many conglomerates and large industries.
