Selangor State Local Government, Public Transport and New Village Development Committee chairman, Ng Sze Han today revealed that a total of 613 illegal telecommunication towers were built in the state over the past decade. Speaking in the Selangor State Legislative Assembly (DUN), Ng said that action will be taken against the owners of these towers, including the issuance of demolition notice for the illegal structures by the end of March.

Furthermore, Ng, who is also the assemblyperson for Kinrara elaborated that the number was obtained from the Periodic Monitoring Operation and Site Audit report carried out in cooperation with Yakin Telesel Sdn Bhd (YTSB) last year. Ng was replying to a question by the Assemblyperson for Balakong, Wong Siew Ki who wanted to know the number of illegal telecommunication towers in Selangor, the effects on the state government’s revenue and actions taken about it.

According to a report by national news agency Bernama, the Selangor state government lost a revenue of RM1.2 million per year due to these illegal towers. Furthermore, Ng also asserted that most of the owners had built the towers without going through the proper process. These include seeking residents’ opinions and a technical review from the relevant departments.

The Kinrara Assemblyperson also clarified that no action were taken against the telecommunication companies previously because the state government must first ensure that telecommunication network in the area would not be affected. Moreover, the state government must also provide a suitable alternative before taking any action.
