Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari yesterday revealed that a total of 5,091 online fraud cases were recorded in the state last year. Speaking at the Selangor Legislative Assembly (DUN), Amirudin said that the cases resulted in losses amounting to RM386,426,494.32.
Bernama quoted the Selangor Menteri Besar as saying that while the number of cases decreased by 169 compared to 5,260 in 2023, the total losses were higher than in 2024. For context, in 2023, the losses recorded from online fraud in the state were RM292,093,647.17.
Amirudin added that most of the victims of fraud cases were retirees and individuals who did not have a full-time job. The Selangor Menteri Besar thus urged the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to intensify efforts to reduce, prevent, and block fraudulent online content.
