Service disruptions for Maxis, Celcom & DiGi as spectrum reallocation exercise begins

If your calls and data service with your telco is spotty these days – don’t be too alarmed. It is mainly due to the current exercise of spectrum re-allocation between the major telecommunications companies in Malaysia. The telcos involved are Maxis, Celcom and Digi.

The whole exercise will take about seven months to complete, and involves the providers migrating their base stations from one spectrum band to another. Previously used for 2G communications, MCMC has announced earlier this year that the 900MHz and the 1800MHz will now be deployed for 4G services. The three companies have been allocated new shares of the spectrum, and the current exercise is the result of the reallocation.

We may be facing some dropped calls or data download disruptions in the next few months, but by July 2017, we can expect the service to be restored to normal, and we may see better services from all telcos by then. Stay tuned to TechNave for more news.
