Sigma recently announced the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens for APS-C sensor bodies. This new zoom lens is the world's first to offer a contant aperture of f/1.8 whereas previously the widest aperture possible for a zoom lens through the entire zoom range was f/2.8. Thanks to its focal range of 27-52.5mm (35mm equivalent)m the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens can be used as a multi-purpose lens for landscapes, portraits and casual photography.

It's internal focusing and zooming mechanisms allow the size of the zoom lens to remain fixed allowing filters like the circular polarizers to be used as the front part of the lens does not rotate. In addition to this, the zoom lens also uses a nine-blade, rounded diaphragm for round bokey and multi-layer coating to help reduce ghosting and flare. Other specs include the following:

  • Lens Construction:                 17 elements in 12 groups
  • Minimum aperture:                  f16
  • Filter size:                               72mm
  • Angle of view (SD1):                76.5°-44.2°
  • Minimum focusing distance:     11in
  • Dimensions (Diameter x Length):      3.1 inches x 4.8 inches
  • Number of diaphragm blades:     9 (rounded diaphragm)
  • Maximum magnification ratio:      1:4.3
  • Weight:     28.6 oz

While the price and date of release have yet to be detailed, Sigma have said that the 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM Art lens will be available for Sigma, Canon and Nikon mounts.
