A few months ago, Sin Chew Daily made a mistake in the Gen-AI image of the Malaysian flag. Today, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) imposed a fine of RM100,000 on Sin Chew Media Corporation Bhd for the error.
A serious offence by the press
In a statement issued today, MCMC said the decision was taken after obtaining permission from the Attorney General's Chambers. The mistake made was uploading an incomplete image of the Jalur Gemilang to their digital website.
Additionally, this incident reveals how media companies' use of generative AI to replace human-powered graphics departments has not been all positive. After the Sin Chew incident, the Jalur Gemilang error caused by AI has been repeated on several social media posts by companies, politicians and individuals.
Sin Chew Daily is not the only one
Besides that, Sinar Karangkraf was fined for false information on the IGP. Apparently, it involved claims about leadership positions in a local political party. Both investigations were conducted under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, with penalties under Section 233(2).
Moreover, the compound action was taken according to Section 243 of the same law. The commission also warned that spreading false content involving national security institutions could disrupt public peace and undermine public confidence in authorities.
