Slices of the Malaysian 5G network bandwidth may be reserved for use by law enforcement agencies

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has proposed law enforcement agencies in Malaysia, such as the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), to use dedicated slices of the 5G network bandwidth to ensure reliable encrypted communication. He added that access to a secure and reliable bandwidth, independent of the general public network could greatly benefit any organisation with critical needs for data security and network stability.

Bernama quoted the Communications Minister as saying that agencies such as PDRM should tap into the benefits of this 'secure slice' feature, which is part of the broader advancements being discussed globally. Fahmi elaborated that this is one of 5G’s features and something that the industry has been discussing.

He also pointed out that the request for a dedicated 5G bandwidth had come from the industry itself, and that it was part of the ongoing efforts by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) in its roll-out of the dual 5G network approach. Fahmi stressed that should this move come to fruition, a secure slice would be dedicated to ensuring uninterrupted bandwidth for sensitive operations.
