With the global economy doom and gloom that is permeating the world right now, one would expect the consumer electronics market will suffer. No, not really. Smartphone sales are actually up by 3.9% when compared to the same time last year, according to Gartner.

The total sales went up 3.9% during the first three months this year to reach almost 350,000,000 devices sold, an impressive feat to say the least. The sale boost was helped by China and their new middle income market looking for new devices to own.

Samsung saw its market share decrease ever so slightly from the same period last year, but still retained the #1 spot with 23.2% of the market. Apple, on the other hand saw a significant decrease in units sold. Huawei and Oppo are perhaps the real winners here, with their sales having a major boost in the year separating the first quarters.

In operating system terms, Android rose about 5% in total market share, while the iOS platform sees a decrease. We may see a surge in Q2, as the iPhone SE sales tallied up by that time. What other big surprise will we see in the second quarter of the year?
