Smartphone shipments predicted to rise up to 12% despite shortages of processors & chips

In the current circumstances, you would think that people would try to save more money for necessary things such as food. However, a new Canalys report says otherwise as the shipment of smartphones will grow by 12% this year. That's an estimated 1.4 billion units around the world, but why is that so?

According to Canalys, several countries are still under lockdown (such as Malaysia) and as you know, the tourist industry took a heavy blow over the past year. Case in point, the unavailability of travelling for a holiday allowed the consumers to spend on something else such as new gadgets. Also, since most of the new smartphones from 2020 have 5G connectivity, 5G phones account for 37% of the global shipment in Q1 2021 and it's expected to rise to 43% (610 million units) if the momentum continues.

Canalys also predicted that with the rolling out of 5G phones as the norm, phone brands may sacrifice some functions so that 5G can be integrated. 5G phones will also be a normal thing to have that cost less than $300 in the future, as many people are switching to it as we speak. Besides that, desktops, laptops and workstations shipment is increasing as well. To date, it has hit 82.7 million units of Q1 2021 which is a 55% increase from 2020.

While it looks good for business, this is not the case for semiconductors. In case you missed the news, the processors and chips shortage continues and brands may have to increase the price tag due to limitations. This is certainly challenging, especially for Malaysians who are price sensitive so brands must balance carefully at both quality and price. Otherwise, they could lose out since the competition is fierce.
