Qualcomm's upcoming flagship mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2, is generating significant buzz in the tech community with leaks suggesting it could reach unprecedented clock speeds. So, what should you know about it?

How fast is it?

According to tipster Digital Chat Station, the new chipset is currently being tested at a staggering 5GHz, with an overclocked variant potentially hitting 5.3GHz.

This pushes the boundaries of smartphone processing, achieving PC-like clock speeds. This development comes as Qualcomm and ARM appear to be pursuing different strategies, with ARM focusing on higher efficiency and lower clock speeds for its future CPU cores.

While the 5GHz speeds were achieved in early validation tests and the final clock speeds in commercial devices will likely be capped for thermal and power efficiency, this still represents a significant jump from its predecessor, which peaks at 4.47GHz. This is currently the highest clock speed in a mobile device, surpassing Apple's M4 chip at 4.40GHz.

This kind of raw power is something gamers in Malaysia would be very excited about, as it promises better performance in the most demanding mobile games.

Beyond the raw clock speed, the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 is rumored to include several other significant upgrades. It is expected to feature second-generation Oryon cores, which are said to be 25 percent faster than the previous generation.

The Adreno 840 GPU is also rumored to offer a 30 percent performance increase and include more cache, jumping from 12MB to 16MB.

Rumored Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 tech specs:

  • CPU: Second-generation Oryon cores, with test speeds reaching 5GHz and an overclocked variant at 5.3GHz.
  • GPU: Adreno 840, offering a 30 percent performance improvement and an increased cache size of 16MB.
  • Manufacturing Process: TSMC's 3nm N3P process.
  • Memory Support: LPDDR6 memory.
  • Cache: 32MB of L2 cache.
  • AI Engine: 7th Gen Qualcomm AI Engine for advanced on-device AI tasks.
  • Modem: X75 5G Modem-RF system for low latency and Wi-Fi 7 readiness.
  • Camera Capabilities: Support for up to 200MP single camera and 8K HDR video recording.

Early benchmarks have also hinted at impressive performance gains. The chipset is rumored to achieve a Geekbench 6 single-core score of over 4,000 and a multi-core score of more than 11,000, representing a substantial improvement over the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Qualcomm has moved its annual Snapdragon Summit to September 23 to 25, hinting at an earlier release date than last year's late October launch. This suggests that smartphones powered by the new chip could start launching as early as October 2025.

There has been no official pricing information released for the chip itself, as it is a component sold to manufacturers, but the phones that will use this chip will likely be priced at a premium, similar to other flagship devices in Malaysia.

Brands like Xiaomi, OnePlus, Realme, and Motorola are rumored to be among the first to release phones with the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2.
