Investigation by Android Police revealed something very interesting about the OnePlus7 Pro. The 3x optical zoom on the telephoto lens is actually not 3x zoom but is around 2.2x zoom instead. The remaining 0.8x is achieved by cropping. With no digital zoom used in the photo, the photo retains its detail and quality.
How it works is by the 13MP sensor outputting an 8MP image cropped by 6MP to achieve the so-called 3x “optical zoom”. The zoom is actually called lossless and not optical at this point, to be honest.The phone uses zoom sensor for portrait mode shots but many have noticed that field of view in portrait mode is actually much wider when compared to the 3x zoom mode. In addition, portrait shots are 13MP in resolution as the software in the OnePlus 7 Pro actually uses the full resolution of the sensor and the zoom in the sensor is only 2.2x.

It was discovered that the camera module’s actual focal length is only 57mm instead of 78mm like advertised and teased by the Chinese company. The 3x lossless zoom the smartphone manages to achieve is done by sacrificing millions of pixels around the subject at 8MP. While this isn’t a huge deal to a majority of users, the fact is very noticeable to those who are well versed in the art of photography. OnePlus has responded back with a statement in regards to the matter.
So while OnePlus had misadvertised a few bits about the zoom on the OnePlus7 Pro, the device does still have 3x zoom, just not 3x optical zoom as advertised. Due to that, those are are picking up the camera for professional sorts of photography should be aware. This isn’t the first time OnePlus has misadvertised their products. The OnePlus 5 was advertised with 2x optical zoom but only has 1.6x optical zoom with the remaining 0.4x zoom managed by the SmartCapture multi-frame technology.
