Social Media Licensing services will be effective starting this 1 January 2025

The Minister of Communications, Fahmi Fadzil, has announced that the government will maintain its position to adopt a regulatory framework, also known as licensing of social media services effective 1 January 2025. So, what should you know about it?

For your information, this step is emphasised as being important to overcome various problems on the internet, such as cyberbullying The minister also said that many cyberbullying activities now take place on social media, especially on Facebook, Instagram and even TikTok.

Under the new rules, all social media platforms or messaging apps with more than 8 million users will need to obtain a special license. Failure to obtain a license after 1 January 2025 is an offence, and appropriate legal action can be taken under Act 588 (Communications and Multimedia Act 1998).

For now, the social platform that has expressed its desire and commitment to register a license in Malaysia has not yet been announced. Hopefully, everything will go smoothly.
