At the NAB (National Association of Broadcasters) show 2013, Sony recently showed off a number of 4K cameras that are not only targeting the industrial users but also showed off a number of models that may be for the consumer level. While Sony have already announced pricing for their 4K TVs, the new prototype 4K cameras, lenses and technology signal the coming of 4K media into the mainstream.

In actuality 4K cameras are already in use, just not available to the public currently. These include Sony's CineAlta 4K cameras with a number of studios already working on theatrical release of their 4K projects. According to Sony, movie theaters should not be a problem for 4K media as there are currently 13500 Sony 4K projectors already around the world.

The prototypes shown here and at NAB show 2013 have a more compact chassis with one of them having an almost DSLR-like body but since they are still prototypes it may take some time until they arrive in the hands of the general public. Gearing up for that day Sony have adopted the XAVC format for 4K video recording with the XAVC S expansion format targeting the consumer market. More affordable 4K displays have also been announced.
