New display technology may not appear that often, but the major display manufacturers would introduce something interesting every few years. In fact, Sony announced a new display system with individual RGB control yesterday.
According to Sony, this display incorporates "independent drive RGB LED with a high-density LED backlight". Essentially, the system can control the RGB LEDs to emit light independently. This allows for displays with high colour purity, covering 99% of the DCI-P3 and 90% of the ITU-R BT.2020 colour gamuts. Additionally, the high-density LED backlight boasts a peak brightness of 4000 cd/m2.
The new display system will also have a function that dynamically allocates power to each RGB channel. In theory, this would result in better colour gradation. The efficiency of the power allocation function is unknown, but it could potentially deliver lower power consumption. Besides that, this new system can process signals at a high bitrate of 96 bits. It's expected to allow for "deep blacks and brilliant whites".
Sony hasn't said when it will unveil a new TV featuring this display tech, but we expect to hear further news sometime this year. With that said, how well do you think such a TV would perform? Would it be better than an OLED or mini LED TV? Share your thoughts in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave for more news like this.
