Back a few months ago, it was confirmed that the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) will have backwards compatibility with PS4 games. Sony is once again emphasising on this, confirming that about 99% of PS4 games will be playable on the PS5.

According to Jim Ryan (via Washington Post), thousands of PS4 games were tested for backwards compatibility and about 99% were playable on the PS5. He didn't give an exact number, but a quick Google search shows that there are 2870 PS4 games listed on Wikipedia. Assuming this number is accurate, that would be there would be 2841 PS4 games that you can play on the PS5. Unfortunately, it seems that the PS5 won't be able to play PS1, PS2, and PS3 games.

The PS5 will switch to PS4 or PS4 Pro mode to run PS4 games

For the backwards compatibility to work, the PS5 will switch to PS4 or PS4 Pro mode. What this does is scale down the GPU speeds to match the older hardware, but allow the older games to take advantage of the PS5's other hardware for faster loading times and higher frame rates. Developers may also opt to optimise the game for even better performance, so you can expect some patches for such games.
