Sony could be planning a PlayStation 5 Slim in 3-4 years time

The Sony PlayStation 5 is by far one of the best-selling devices in 2020 and it just keeps getting sold out whenever new stocks arrive. As of 31 December 2020, over 4.5 million PS5 consoles have been sold and it's still selling today over these past three months. However, some PS fans decide to wait out a bit longer for a new variant which could be the PS5 Slim.

According to this gamer called RedGamingTech, he claimed that Sony has booked with TSMC in 2023 for their 5nm processor node. To give you a brief history, the original PS4 came with a 28nm node and the PS4 Slim and Pro were using 16nm. While that makes sense on paper, RedGamingTech said this is more like a theory than a leak.

Similar to smartphones, a smaller chipset would typically be more efficient in battery consumption so the PS5 Slim should consume less power as well. There's no telling when a PS5 Slim could be unveiled, but looking back at Sony's history - it's usually 3-4 years before releasing a slim variant just like the PS2 Slim and PS4 Slim. If Sony starts production in 2023, we may see it in 2024.

To recap, the PS5 Digital Edition is priced at RM1869 while the Ultra HD Blu-ray version is priced at RM2299. You can get one now in gaming stores across Malaysia or online (Sony's store in Lazada or Shopee) but good luck finding one as it's often sold out.
