The last Xperia Compact was the Xperia XZ2 in 2018

The smartphone market hasn't been a big focus for Sony in recent years, but the company has continued to make new devices every year. For next year, one of it is expected to be mid-range 5G device - Xperia 10 III. But another rumour hints that there would be a return of the Compact series of smartphones.

According to AndroidNext (source in Japanese), an Xperia Compact device could be launched in the first half of 2021. The device will have a 5.5-inch screen and come with the Snapdragon 775, which is Qualcomm's next mid-range 5G chipset. It's also said that this device will not be a Compact variant of the Xperia 1 III or Xperia 10 III.

Assuming that Sony doesn't come up with a new model, this rumoured device could either be the Xperia 1 III Compact or Xperia 5 III Compact. It'll also be the first Compact device since the Xperia XZ2 Compact launched in 2018. A new Compact model is a fairly exciting piece of news for people who like smaller devices, but it's best to take the rumour with a healthy pinch of salt.
