Earlier this year, Sony launched new tiered plans for its PlayStation Plus subscription service and it looks like they are not as popular as the Japanese company expected. In fact, according to Sony’s latest fiscal earnings report, PlayStation Plus subscribers number have dropped by almost 2 million!

Specifically, the number of subscribers has dropped from 47.3 million in June 2022 to 45.4 million by the end of September 2022. The company’s latest financial report which can be viewed here also revealed that total time spent playing games on PlayStation also dropped by approximately 10 per cent year-on-year.

Sony attributed the drop in subscription numbers as well as playing times to the lack of PlayStation 5 (PS5) availability in the market. The report showed that a majority of subscribers are using a PS5 and accordingly, the company is planning to ramp up production of the console.

By doing so, Sony hopes that it can recoup some of the lost PlayStation Plus subscribers. Of course, the PS5 is super popular and always in demand, so this is a no-brainer. In the same report, the Japanese company said that it has now sold 25 million units of PS5.
