Sony has not yet made a final decision on the launch date and price of the PlayStation 6 (PS6)

According to an official statement from Sony Group President and CEO via IGN SEA, Hiroki Totoki, in the recent FY2025 fourth quarter financial call, the company is still closely monitoring market conditions before deciding on its next strategy and when to launch the PS6. So, what should you know about it?

"We haven't decided yet when we will launch this new console, or at what price," he said as reported by Video Games Chronicle (VGC).

Moreover, Totoki explained that the sharp increase in the price of key components, especially memory and semiconductors, is a major factor. The extremely high global demand for AI chips is causing a supply shortage that is expected to continue until fiscal year 2027.

The PS5 is selling slowly at the moment

At the same time, PS5 sales have been performing somewhat slower than its predecessor. To date, PS5 has reached 93.7 million units sold worldwide. However, at the same level, the PS4 once reached around 97 million units, meaning the PS5 is now lagging by around 3.3 million units.

Moreover, PS5 fourth-quarter sales also declined by nearly 50% compared to last year, with only 1.5 million units shipped. Despite slowing hardware sales, PlayStation's software division remained strong with 74.6 million game units sold during the quarter.

Additionally, Totoki stated that Sony is conducting various simulations, including the possibility of changing the business model, to ensure that the PS6 can be launched with the most optimal strategy. This means that the launch of the PS6, previously predicted to arrive around 2027, is still uncertain, and the final price may be higher than initially expected due to soaring component costs.
