Yup, you read that right, there's gonna be a 48MP sensor by Sony and that has set the bar of the highest pixel count in the industry. Moreover, this new sensor is made specifically for smartphone cameras! Let's what this bad boy has in stored for me.

According to the Sony website, the new sensor is called IMX586 stacked CMOS image and is currently the world's first ultra-compact pixel size of 0.8μm. With that, this is why it was possible to pack in the 48MP into the 1/2 type unit and it's a perfect solution for smartphones that don't really allow as much as space a DSLR. Speaking of DSLR, this could effectively kill off the market as the new sensor features a Quad Bayer colour filter array. Long story short, it's able to produce images in low noises thanks to the integrated exposure control and signal processing functionality technology.

So to speak, the new sensor was designed to improve light collection efficiency and photoelectric conversion efficiency, even when in zooming in, the image quality won't be as blurred as its predecessors. The dynamic range is four times greater than any conventional products so that's something to look forward to in mobile photography.
