Sony has announced that it will completely cease production of its recording media by February 2025. The announcement marks the end of the era for physical formats such as Blu-rayDiscsc, MiniDisc and MiniDV cassettes. The decision was made in response to declining demand for physical media due to the dominance of digital technology.
For your information, the discontinuation involves Blu-ray recording formats such as BD-RE and BD-R, covering 11 models, MiniDisc for audio recording, MD data storage media such as “MDW80T” and “MMD-140B,” and MiniDV cassettes, including 70-minute versions and variety packs. No replacement products will be introduced while existing stock is still available at Sony stores.
Moreover, Sony explained that the shift to video streaming services, cloud storage and other digital technologies was the main reason behind this discontinuation. This decision was first mentioned in July 2024 when Sony announced plans to discontinue its storage media business.
