Sony has recently filed a new patent application in the United States for a new technology that would block piracy apps on its smart TVs (which run Android TV) and streaming devices. Filed on 5 January 2023, the patent application is still in its early process and there’s no guarantee that it would be approved.
According to the patent application which was shared by Torrentfreak, Sony described the technology as a system-level “monitor” application that forms part of the Operating System. Essentially, it contains a list of known pirated network resources such as URLs and IP addresses and would identify and block third-party apps from accessing the resources.
Furthermore, it will also block the third-party apps from running, throttle them or pause the content at irregular intervals to frustrate viewers. Okay, that sounds pretty awful and would definitely deter people from watching pirated content on a smart TV. But then again, wouldn’t that just make people not want to buy a Sony smart TV?
