When Sony announced the PlayStation 5 Pro's price, it came as a shock because it was so expensive - even more so in Malaysia, where it's priced at a staggering RM3,849 without a disc drive. IGN recently interviewed PlayStation Senior Principal Product Manager Toshi Aoki about his thoughts.
When asked about how to justify the PS5 Pro's price tag, Aoki replied that it's all about the technologies that he just mentioned (high fidelity, 60FPS, GPU and others) to deliver new experiences for gamers. In addition, the 2TB SSD, WiFi 7 and new gameplay technologies contributed to the cost, "so it's more of a full package that will give that exceptional value to the players". He also added that "the most engaged players" are the main target audience.
As for the lack of a disc drive and selling the vertical stand separately, Aoki said this is "a matter of giving players choices". On top of that, although most players are avocating having discs, not all of them have discs and digital purchases tend to be more popular (according to statistics). Overall, Aoki thinks "it's more of the balance of the value proposition that we're giving."
There are also other interesting interview tidbits between Aoki and IGN. One of which is when Sony was already discussing the PS5 Pro before the PS5 launch in 2020. To read the full interview, you can visit the website here to check it out.
