Sony will become the Japanese media giant's largest shareholder for FromSoftware's parent company, Kadokawa Corporation. The Tech giant holds about 10% of its shares - including a stake acquired in February 2021. So, what should you know about it?

According to the strategic capital and business alliance agreement, Kadokawa will carry out a third-party allocation to Sony on January 7, 2025, in which Sony will acquire 12.05 million new Kadokawa shares valued at approximately 50 billion yen (around RM1.43 billion).

In a joint statement (1, 2 ), Sony and Kadokawa expressed their intention to further strengthen their collaboration to maximise the value of both companies' IP globally. The two are planning specific initiatives for the collaboration, including adapting Kadokawa IP into live-action films and TV dramas, co-producing anime, expanding the global distribution of Kadokawa anime, publishing games as well and developing talent for virtual production.

Before it was officially confirmed, there was previous speculation that Sony was considering a takeover of the company. Kadokawa later confirmed that Sony had expressed interest in acquiring shares, but at that time, no decision had been made.
