Yesterday (October 9th), head of the project, Bill Peebles, announced on X that Sora has surpassed one million downloads in less than five days, a rate even faster than ChatGPT's initial release. So, what should you know about it?
Sora is currently topping the Apple App Store’s chart
For your information, this achievement is impressive because it was achieved while still being limited to the US and Canada, requiring an invitation only. Sora has already topped the Apple App Store's free app charts.
sora hit 1M app downloads in <5 days, even faster than chatgpt did (despite the invite flow and only targeting north america!)!

team working hard to keep up with surging growth. more features and fixes to overmoderation on the way!
Launched at the end of September, this new app is arguably the " AI version of TikTok ." To use it, you will have to upload a short video yourself or a friend (officially called a "cameo" ) and then, using a prompt, have the AI transform that footage into a brand new video. Want a movie, a comedy, or even an animated film? It's all yours.
Moreover, Sora uses OpenAI's own Sora 2 video generation model, which can handle complex dynamic images and automatically generate sound, achieving true audio-visual synchronisation. In short, the generated videos are not only realistic but also have voice-overs.
In addition to its powerful technology, Sora also features a prominent social component. OpenAI explains that the app's original purpose was to allow friends to collaborate and create with AI, hence its invitation-only nature.
Furthermore, the Content feature in the feed is recommended based on who you follow or interact with, and users are regularly asked to "enjoy the experience." The overall experience feels more like an AI-powered creative community.
