Malaysia is no stranger in the gaming industry, although we are mostly known for our e-sports athletes who are amongst the best in the world in various competitive gaming titles. However, did you know that we have a thriving game development scene too?

In fact, the first ‘Buatan Malaysia’ massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), Fung Wan Online was launched way back in 2003 by Phoenix Games Studios. Now, after nearly two decades, another MMORPG developed entirely in Malaysia is finally close to release and it's called Soulbond: Rebels Arise.

The game is historic too, as it is the first-ever blockchain-led MMORPG utilising non-fungible tokens (NFTs). Developed by Metabond, led by its founder Datuk Clifford Hii, Soulbound: Rebels Arise utilises the expertise of Jeremy Choo who is known for developing Eximius, a strategic action shooter game developed by the latter’s studio, Ammobox.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, the game is still currently under development. However, the minting of its first game-related NFT offering called the Ren Empire has already began with the Student Privilege List on 19 March 2022.

Meanwhile, public sales of the NFT will begin this 27 March. Metabond is also expected to proceed with 4 more NFT offerings for Soulbound: Rebels Arise before the game is completed.
