The South Korean Government has removed DeepSeek from the Apple App Store and Google Play in the country, essentially banning all new downloads of the AI chatbot. According to the country’s Personal Information Protection Commission, the move was due to privacy concerns.
As shared by the BBC, South Korea will only allow DeepSeek to become available again after “improvements and remedies” are made to ensure it complies with the country’s personal data protection laws. Before its removal from app stores, the DeepSeek app had over a million weekly users in South Korea.
DeepSeek was reportedly removed from app stores in the country on 15 February. Prior to this, several South Korean government agencies had banned their employees from downloading the chatbot on their work devices.
