Steam has updated its Purchasing Issues FAQ to confirm that PayPal is now only available for transactions in six currencies: Euro (EUR), Canadian Dollar (CAD), British Pound (GBP), Japanese Yen (JPY), Australian Dollar (AUD), and United States Dollar (USD).
This change means that many users worldwide can no longer use PayPal for purchases on the platform. So, what should you know about it?
What happened
In early July 2025, PayPal’s acquiring bank stopped processing Steam transactions in currencies outside of the supported list.
As a result, PayPal has been removed as a payment option in several countries, forcing users to switch to other payment methods.
Valve has acknowledged the issue but has not provided a timeline for when PayPal support might return. Countries affected include Switzerland, Poland, Norway, and Mexico, among others.
For Malaysia, PayPal has been unavailable for Steam purchases for almost a decade, so this update serves more as a confirmation of the existing situation.
What about Malaysia?
For Malaysian gamers, this change has little immediate impact, as PayPal was already not an option. However, the situation highlights how dependent online platforms like Steam are on third-party financial agreements, and how quickly payment access can change when those agreements shift.
For now, Malaysian users can continue to rely on alternatives such as Steam Wallet codes, gift cards, and local bank transfers.
While Valve has stated it is exploring other payment options, the lack of a clear timeline leaves global users waiting for further developments.
