We are currently in the midst of the Aidilfitri festive season and the first since the start of the pandemic in which movement restrictions have been relaxed. Hence, many Malaysians are taking the opportunity to drive cross-country back to their hometowns to celebrate Hari Raya.

For those of you that ‘balik kampung’ by road this festive period, you probably notice different type of drivers throughout your journey. Well, if you notice road users that are more sensible and drive safely, according to a new study, they are most probably Android users rather than iPhone users.

The study, conducted by Jerry, a car insurance comparison service based in the United States found that Android users achieved higher safe-driving scores than their iPhone counterparts. In fact, Android users are better and safer drivers than iPhone users in all six categories of the study.

These include overall score, distraction, speed, turning, accelerating and braking. For reference, the study analysed the driving habits of 20,000 drivers in the United States during 13 million kilometres of driving over a 2-weeks period.

Among the intriguing takeaways from the study is that Android users achieved higher scores regardless of age, gender, marital status, education, and credit rating. These characteristics are otherwise strong predictors of safe-driving scores.

Besides that, the widest margin in the findings of the study is in the distraction category. This essentially means that  Android users more often than not kept their hands off their phones while driving compared to those that use iPhone.

While it is merely speculative, the study believe that the difference in scoring may be a result of rule-based versus emotional-based driving. The researchers referenced two previous studies which found that Android users are more conscientious and exhibited higher levels of honesty.
