Study shows more than 5 billion people are social media users

Increasingly more people are on social media nowadays. But how many people are there? Most don't know unless they look at surveys or studies, so it's great that a new study was published to update netizens.

According to DataPortal, the number of active social media users has surpassed the 5 billion mark. At 5.04 billion, social media users now account for 62.3% of the world's population. The number of users rose by 266 million compared to last year, equivalent to a 5.6% year-on-year growth. The study also showed social media users are browsing or using social media platforms for an average of 2 hours and 23 minutes daily.

Besides the above, the study also revealed a few fun facts. First, the increase of 266 million users is roughly 8 times our country's total population. Also, Malaysia has a high percentage of social media users. Specifically, over 83.1% of Malaysians use social media in one way or another. Facebook was listed as the most-used platform at 3.049 billion users, followed by YouTube at 2.491 billion. WhatsApp and Instagram share third place with 2 billion users.
