Telekom Research and Development Sdn Bhd (TM R&D), the innovation arm of Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ZTE (Malaysia) Corporation Sdn Bhd (ZTE) to collaborate on optical network research, with the aim of bringing 50Gbps bandwidth to Malaysia.

Through this agreement, TM R&D and ZTE will work together on next-generation Passive Optical Network (PON) access technology or 50GPON. Services that might be improved include 5G, Cloud Virtual Reality (VR), industrial intelligent manufacturing for high bandwidth, low latency and jitter, and clock synchronisation.

The team showing off the 50GPON download and upload speeds

Thankfully, they have proved that an ultra-wide transmission rate of 50GPON technology can be successful with download speeds of 44Gbps and upload speeds of 21Gbps. Unfortunately, neither party has given any timeline as to when we might see the first 50Gbps network in Malaysia.

These things do take time, so we’d expect anything even remotely workable to appear in the next couple of years or so. What would you do with 50Gbps Internet? Let us know on our Facebook page or in the comments below and stay tuned to TechNave.com.
