Telekom Malaysia (TM) yesterday announced that it has expanded its fibre network to cover 5.9 million premises in our country within just the first quarter of 2022. Hence, TM is now only 100,000 premises short of the targeted 6 million entrusted to them under the National Digital Network (JENDELA) initiative.

TM chief executive officer (CEO) Mohamed Tajul Mohamed Sultan lauded the expanded fibre network coverage, saying that it would speed up the launch of 5G network in Malaysia. He further said that TM’s fibre infrastructure would benefit mobile telecommunication towers.

As reported by national news agency Bernama, the TM CEO also revealed that the company’s fiberisation efforts targeted existing Streamyx users. In fact, 600,000 out of 900,000 users have now migrated to the fibre technology network, which is better and faster than the copper technology used by the old Streamyx network.

Currently, TM is working to provide fibre facilities for the remaining 300,000 Streamyx users. Mohamed Tajul then stressed that TM would continue this initiative so that it reached rural areas.

TM’s aim is to ensuring that Malaysians will be able to enjoy fibre infrastructure facilities with the best quality broadband services, regardless of their locations. This is in line with JENDELA which aims to provide wider coverage and a better broadband quality experience for the people as a step in Malaysia’s readiness to switch to 5G technology.

The first phase (2020-2022) aims to expand 4G mobile broadband coverage from 91.8 percent to 96.9 per ent in populated areas, increase mobile broadband speed from 25Mbps to 35Mbps, and enable 7.5 million premises to have access to gigabit-speed fixed line broadband, Meanwhile, the second phase will see the transition to 5G after a strong platform in the first phase is achieved.
